The Trustee of the Year Award will be shared by two winners for the first time in the award's history.

Two winners were named for the first time in the Trustee of the Year Award for 2009.

Tasplan independent chairman Doug Fry and Vision Super member director and VicSuper director Bill Watton were announced as joint recipients.

The award was handed out yesterday at the Conference of Major Superannuation Funds.

Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees chief executive Fiona Reynolds praised Fry for being a "true gentleman".

He also received recognition from Tasplan chief executive Neil Cassidy.

"Doug is able to communicate and converse with people from all levels. He is passionate about his family, Tasplan and Tasmania," Cassidy said.

Bill Watton has been in the industry for over three decades and was the founding director of VicSuper.

"He was the driving force behind member advice and an early adopter of sustainability and environment, social and governance principles," VicSuper chief executive Bob Welsh said.

Vision Super chief executive Rob Brooks said he has a deep respect and trust for Watton.

Winners were selected by fulfilling and exceeding a number of criteria, including a commitment to improving the super industry and having a dialogue with members.

The presenter of the award, Queensland Investment Corporation general manager client services Margaret Sugden, said this year it was impossible to split the winners.

Last year's winner was HESTA board member Beth Mohle.
