Nearly 60 per cent of people believe the 9 per cent superannuation guarantee (SG) levy should be increased, according to a survey by the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA).
Of that 60 per cent, 39 per cent said the SG rate should be boosted to 15 per cent, while 13 per cent believed a slight increase to 10 per cent would be adequate.
People are starting to understand that an employer contribution of 9 per cent is not enough for them, ASFA chief executive Pauline Vamos said.
"For many years, our policy has been for a 15 per cent SG by 2015. This will be the responsibility of the employer, employee and the Government," she said.
The survey also showed 78 per cent of people needed assistance with the planning of their retirement. This included retirement projections, simple advice provision by super funds and financial planning.
There was greater demand for assistance by women, with 80 per cent of women wanting advice to help them achieve their retirement goals.
The survey was launched at the annual ASFA conference yesterday and was conducted by McNair Ingenuity Research.
