Industry raises $100k for UNHCR

The financial services and superannuation industry came out in force for the UNHCR's annual World Refugee breakfast.

Over $100,000 was raised at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) World Refugee Day breakfast last week.

More than 340 guests from the financial services industry supported the event. All money raised will be used to fund malaria prevention and treatment programs in the Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda.

Former Australian rugby union front rower Phil Kearns chaired the event, introducing UNHCR patron and Governor-General Quentin Bryce.

The event also marked the 10th anniversary of Australia's support for the UNHCR. Over $30 million has been raised from the Australian community in the past 10 years.

 
 

The organisation is supported by a number of people in the superannuation and financial services industry, including First State Super chief executive Michael Dwyer and Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees chief executive Fiona Reynolds.

Asset Super trustee Naomi Steer is also the UNHCR national director.
