Mercer has found a successor to former chief executive Michele Burns.

Global consultancy firm Mercer has appointed Julio Portalatin as president and chief executive.

Portalain will take up his position from 1 February and replaces Mercer's previous chief executive, Michele Burns, who resigned in October last year to become executive director of a retirement policy centre formed by Mercer parent company Marsh & McLennan.

He was previously chief executive of Chartis Growth Economies and senior vice president at American International Group (AIG).

At AIG, he had responsibility for operations in the Asia-Pacific region, South Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Central Europe.

"Julio has a strong international background and extensive experience in the strategic leadership and operation of complex global businesses," Marsh & McLennan group president and chief operating officer Dan Glaser said.

"His track-record for recognising global growth opportunities, maximising client relationships and innovating in the development and delivery of products and services make him the right person to lead Mercer forward."

Glaser served as interim chief executive of Mercer, after Burns resigned last year.

Portalatin will be based in New York.
