Not content with poaching local talent, fund manager MMC has cast its net overseas.

Fund manager MMC has added Brendan Burgess to its investment team, its second new recruit within a month.

Burgess was most recently senior portfolio manager and an executive director of South African investment business Abvest Associates, where he was responsible for managing $1 billion in alternative products.

Prior to this, Brendan worked as an investment consultant and portfolio manager with PSG Investment Bank, Velocity Asset Management and Old Mutual Asset Managers.

MMC chief executive Andrew Fairweather said the group was looking to build a significant asset management business in the Australian market.

"We are now open to developing new product, in conjunction with our partners, and utilising the strength of our new talent," Fairweather said.

Former co-head of Credit Suisse Asset Management's small companies fund, Stephen Atkinson, joined MMC in March.

MMC has over $570 million of funds under management in five core funds.
