Carmel Tebbutt joins Media Super following a 17-year parliamentary career, serving in a number of portfolios including deputy premier.
Media Super chair Gerard Noonan said Ms Tebbutt's skills and experience would strengthen the overall governance of the fund.
"In government, Ms. Tebbutt managed challenging and complex portfolios. She has strong financial and risk management skills, and has been responsible for large portfolios with significant budgets", Mr Noonan said.
"Media Super has previously had several independent directors, so the addition of an independent director to the board will be an easy transition.
"Media Super remains resolutely committed to the ‘equal representation’ model that provides direct representation for employees and employers in the printing, media, entertainment and arts industries," he said.
