Mr Burns joins The Trust Company from his previous role at ASB Bank as general manager.
“I am delighted with the depth of experience and leadership Ian will bring to our team,” said Shailendra Singh, chief executive officer for The Trust Company.
One of the group’s key priorities for the current financial year is to reposition Guardian Trust for growth, he said.
“Guardian Trust has a strong brand in the New Zealand market and under Ian’s leadership we will look to finalise the new strategy for Guardian Trust focused on growth,” he added.
Mr Burns said he was looking forward to working with the New Zealand team and supporting them in an exciting period focused on growth and improving client service.
Prior to his time at ASB Bank, Ian held the position of managing director of Barclays Wealth.
