"[Pauline] is known for driving policy, governance and regulation excellence – all attributes which mirror the board’s values and vision," Mr Walsh said.

"Her appointment firmly establishes our determination in ensuring we have the right firepower behind us to achieve our growth objectives and deliver value added services to clients."

For her part, Ms Vamos said, "Mercer’s acquisition of Pillar Administration and partnership with Virgin Money have created a real buzz in the superannuation industry.

"Mercer is also uniquely positioned at a time when many funds are reviewing their merger and consolidation options in light of the changing regulatory and competitive environment. It’s an exciting time to join the board."

Ms Vamos was the chief executive of ASFA for eight and a half years until her departure on 30 June 2016.
