Global investment manager Pendal has broadened its global equity strategy with the appointment of a new impact investment team.

The team will join Regnan, an ESG research provider owned by Pendal.

The four-person team will be led by Tim Crockford, senior fund manager, working with Mohsin Ahmad, Maxime Le Floch and Maxine Wille. The team previously managed the Hermes Impact Opportunities Equity Fund, which Mr Crockford co-launched in 2017.

“One of our strategic objectives is to become a global leader in responsible investment,” said Mr Richard Brandweiner, chief executive of Pendal Australia.

“The move to 100 per cent ownership of Regnan in early 2019 and now the appointment of a specialist impact investment team [demonstrate] our commitment to delivering on this strategy.”

The catalyst driving the demand for impact investments is the development of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Current forecasts required to meet the SDGs estimate investments of between [$5 trillion and $7 trillion] per year until 2030.

“This is an important strategic initiative for Pendal and Regnan,” said Mr Braindweiner.

“The team hire expands our investment capability while enabling us to leverage Regnan’s ESG expertise. It allows us to credibly provide specialist socially responsible products that meet growing client demand for investment approaches that go beyond traditional risk and return considerations.”
