The Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA) has appointed a former director of risk management consultants Promontory as its new chief executive.

The industry body said its new chief Brett Harper would succeed David Lynch, who is retiring from AFMA after 25 years of service.

Mr Harper joins AFMA from Promontory Australia, with over 20 years of domestic and international experience in risk management of investment and commercial banking, insurance, and asset management businesses.

For the last three years, Mr Harper has served as a director at Promontory providing consulting and risk management advisory services.

Prior to his time at Promontory, Mr Harper has held a number of senior roles including chief operating officer and general manager of financial markets at Anglo Irish Bank in Dublin, global head of traded market risk and business risk review at Barclays in London and head of balance sheet and market risk at APRA.

“I am delighted that Brett is joining AFMA as our new Chief Executive Officer. He brings a vast amount of experience in wholesale markets with a focus on risk management and regulatory change,” said Robert Bedwell, chair of the AFMA board.

“This will be critical as AFMA continues its advocacy for public policy and regulation that promote fair, competitive, and efficient markets.”
