HSBC appoints two new executives

The firm has named new heads for its global banking and markets business in Australia.

HSBC has announced the appointment of Nick Wheeler as head of markets and securities services, Australia and New Zealand, and Anita O’Brien as head of global banking, Australia.

Mr Wheeler originally joined HSBC in 2004 and has held a number of senior roles within the firm’s markets and securities services business including head of institutional and wealth sales for ASEAN and co-head of ESG for the Asia-Pacific region.

Ms O’Brien joined HSBC as head of the financial institutions group in Australia and New Zealand in 2018 after a 20-year career in the banking sector.

HSBC said that Ms O’Brien commenced in her new role on 23 March after acting in it on an interim basis since November last year, while Mr Wheeler commenced in his role on 1 April.

“We are excited to welcome Nick and Anita to the executive team,” said HSBC Australia CEO Kaber Mclean.

“Both bring an impressive track record of building strong client relationships, delivering business growth and fostering talent, so will be instrumental in driving the continued growth of our Global Banking and Markets business in Australia.”

Last week, HSBC’s asset management division announced the appointment of a seven-member listed infrastructure equity team originally from AMP Capital.
