The firm has hired the former head of Franklin Templeton’s private markets and alternatives business in Asia.

Aviva Investors has announced the appointment of Richard Surrency as its new head of Asia Pacific.

Mr Surrency joins from Franklin Templeton, where he led the firm’s private markets and alternatives business in Asia while serving as a member of its APAC Executive Committee.

He developed country-level strategies and partnered with the alternative investment, product and distribution teams to generate solutions for institutional and sophisticated clients.

Prior to his time at Franklin Templeton, Mr Surrency was CEO of Algebris Investments (Asia) with responsibility for the growth of the firm in the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. He has also held senior APAC roles at Morgan Stanley and BNY Mellon.

“Richard brings over 20 years of experience, exceptional leadership skills and strong relationships with major Asian institutions, including SWFs, pension funds, insurers and GFIs,” said Aviva Investors' global head of distribution, Scott Callander.

“His wealth of experience and expertise will be invaluable in this critical role given the significance, scale and potential growth opportunities in the region.”

In his new role, Mr Surrency will be based in Singapore and will report to Mr Callander.

Last month, Aviva Investors suggested that for global central banks, an economic slowdown or recession will be considered a price worth paying in their battle against high inflation.

The firm predicted that most developed economies will experience a recession during the next year as central banks continue tightening monetary policy.
