The fund manager has appointed an experienced business leader to succeed its co-founder and executive chairperson, Andrew McKinnon.

Robert Johanson has been appointed chair of GSFM, effective 1 October 2024.

Bringing over three decades of experience to the board, Johanson previously served as chairman at Bendigo and Adelaide Bank for 12 years and a director of Grant Samuel for more than 20 years. He has also been a member of the Takeovers Panel.

Highlighting Johanson’s vast experience, GSFM chief executive Damien McIntyre said he would play an important role in building out GSFM’s presence in the local market.

“We welcome Robert to the board and are looking forward to working with him to continue to grow the GSFM presence in the Australian market,” he said.

“He has over 30 years’ experience in corporate finance and investment banking and he has been involved in a wide array of capital markets transactions for several leading corporations.”

Stepping into the role, Johanson will take the reins from McKinnon, who has held the position of executive chairman of the GSFM board since 2017. He has been responsible for working closely with the firm’s institutional clients, including super funds, government institutions, and asset consultants, as well as GSFM’s investment partners.

Announcing the changes, GSFM chief executive McIntyre paid tribute to McKinnon’s tenure as chairperson.

“On behalf of GSFM, I extend our thanks and appreciation to Andrew. He has been an integral part of the GSFM business for 17 years, from inception as its first CEO, and ultimately as executive chairman,” he said.

“From all the staff and executives at GSFM and the board, we wish Andrew a wonderful retirement, and all the best as he starts this next chapter in his life.”
