To grow and further expand business operations in the Asia region, ANZ has made key appointments - headhunting experts from competitors.

ANZ's Asia Pacific division has hired St George bank's Sean West as managing director wealth and HSBC's Ross Foden as head of operations.

These appointments are an important part of the bank's strategy to grow its business in the Asia Pacific to 20 per cent of group earnings by 2012 and create a "super regional bank," ANZ group managing director Asia Pacific, Alex Thursby said.

West will lead the strategic growth in investment and insurance in ANZ's selected Asian markets.

Foden, who was most recently responsible for the strategic direction, development and management of HSBC's Global Resourcing Centre in Malaysia, supported retail and commercial banking operations in 21 countries.

"There are significant opportunities in the medium-term to build a Wealth business to meet the growing aspirations of customers in Asia, particularly in our key markets of Greater China, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Malaysia." Thursby said.

Both will be based in Singapore with Foden due to start on September 1 and West on September 15.

Earlier this year, the ANZ group recruited Westpac's head of migrant and multicultural banking division Sew Lee, who was hired as ANZ private bank director for the Asian segment and is based in Sydney.
