A new financial literacy program is being distributed to secondary schools across the nation.

A financial literacy program targeting secondary schools has been launched by the Government and ASIC.

The program has been designed to assist young Australians with making decisions about insurance and superannuation

Your Money Starter - Insurance and Super (YMS) is a financial literacy resource for secondary schools  in each state and territory, and is currently being distributed to every secondary school across the country.

It comprises teachers' guides, classroom activities, assessments, interactive online games and animated movies, investigative projects, fact sheets and glossaries.

ASIC chair Tony D'Aloisio said using innovative models to deliver information is essential for encouraging engagement with young Australians.

"Your Money Starter includes a variety of innovative classroom materials, activities and multimedia elements, designed to make learning about financial services relevant and attractive to teenagers," D'Aloisio said.

According to research, 80 to 85 per cent of Australians aged 12 to 17 recognise the need to learn more about choosing appropriate insurance and planning for their financial future.
