A former Goldman Sachs JB Were employee has been banned from providing financial services for five years over fears he poses a public risk.

A former Goldman Sachs JB Were (GSJBW) employee has been banned from providing financial services for five years over fears that he poses a public risk.

ASIC barred Callen Jeffrey Soffer after being convicted in February last year of obtaining property by deception in 2004 and making an unauthorised transaction of $100,000 while working for GSJBW.

At the time of the offence Soffer was employed as a new business administrator within GSJBW's asset management division, an ASIC spokesperson said. He worked at the firm from February to October 2004.

Last year the Victorian County Court ordered Soffer, who lives in Melbourne, to serve two years of community service.

ASIC said Soffer was banned because the regulator was concerned he posed a risk to the public and would fail to act with honesty and integrity.
