Gen Y gives thumbs up to insurance

Young people find insurance a rewarding career choice, a new survey has found.

Working in insurance is a satisfying and rewarding career choice for Generation Y, a survey by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) has revealed.

Results from ANZIIF's Generation i evaluation survey showed 95 per cent of around 500 respondents enjoyed working in the industry.

"One of the biggest challenges for the insurance industry remains attracting new people, however, once they begin working here and discover the breadth of opportunities the industry offers, they stay," ANZIIF marketing and communications manager Cameron Skews said.

While 68 per cent of young insurance professionals said insurance was an unintentional career choice, 74 per cent said they planned to remain in the industry for six or more years.

This indicates that while insurance still struggles with its image as a career choice, those who make a career in the industry stick around, Skews said.

One of the largest Generation Y studies to be undertaken in Australia found that 63 per cent of young people stay in their jobs for less than two years, while 82 per cent of Generation i survey respondents said they planned on staying in the insurance industry for four or more years, he said.

"That is an incredible result for the insurance industry and a key reason the Generation i program exists - to help retain this young, ambitious talent for the industry," Skews said.

Survey results showed lifelong learning was also important to respondents, with 93 per cent interested in attending events aimed at young professionals and 86 per cent ambitious or very ambitious about their career in insurance.

ANZIIF's Generation i program provides young insurance professionals with a collective voice and the opportunity to attend regular networking events.
