Kaplan appoints a former ANZ corporate banking exec to spearhead the firm.

Education provider Kaplan Professional Australia (Kaplan) has appointed ANZ managing director of corporate banking Neil Shilbury as its new chief executive.

Shilbury replaces Warren Jacobson, who resigned from the company last month. He takes over from president of Kaplan's Asia Pacific operations Mark Coggins, who has since been overseeing the company's Australian operations.

According to Coggins, Shilbury's exceptional experience and expertise in the Australian and international corporate banking sector was instrumental in his appointment.

Shilbury has held roles at ANZ, including head of business banking for New South Wales and Queensland and joint head of the bank's newly established leveraged finance unit.

He also held roles in ANZ's corporate and institutional banking division, spending five years in the bank's Hong Kong office and in Bangkok as the bank's Thailand country head.

"I am delighted that Neil has decided to join us during this exciting period of Kaplan's growth in Australia," Coggins said.

"Due to the ongoing global recession, 2009 will be a challenging year for the Kaplan Professional unit in Australia, however we believe that Neil will leverage current market opportunities and build strength in our core focus areas of distribution, student experience and product development.

"Neil will immediately add value to the business due to his understanding of the financial services industry, his contacts and exceptional strategic and leadership skills."

Shillbury will begin his role in early February.
