MLC has launched a mentoring program for financial planning principals.

MLC has established a mentoring program to support financial planners who own their own businesses, the group has announced.

The MLC Business Owner Mentor Program will provide new business owners with access to one-on-one support from a network of well-established and successful financial planning principals drawn from across MLC licensees.

These include dealer groups such as Godfrey Pembroke, NAB Financial Planning, Garvan, Apogee and MLC Financial Planning.

MLC said the program had been developed following feedback from planners who said they would greatly value a sounding board against which to test their vision and business plans.

MLC general manager of business development Peter Greenaway said MLC was recognised as having one of the most comprehensive support capabilities for new and early-growth businesses in the financial planning profession.

"We see the Business Owner Mentor Program as the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle in what we call our Start-Up Package, which includes the MLC Advice Business School, access to a dedicated practice development manager and the ability to acquire a book of client servicing rights," Greenaway said.

"Working with 450 businesses which are operating right across the business lifecycle, we know what it takes to run a successful advice business."

He said anyone setting up a business in today's environment should check the support they received from their licensee and not leave their success to chance.

The program would initially be launched in Victoria from February, with other states to follow, he said.
