The pressure is on for Australia's hedge fund experts to show their mettle. This Thursday sees the inaugural Australian Hedge Fund Charity Poker Tournament at the City Tattersalls Club in Sydney. It will be a chance for hedge fund minnows and heavyweights alike to pitch their skills against one another, as well as do their bit financially for children's charity Cure Our Kids.

The game will be Texas Holdem Poker and participants are obliged to part with $300 for a place at the table. Although not quite Casino Royale stakes, there will undoubtedly be some fiercely competitive managers eager to put one over on the competition. The winner will receive $5000 in cash and a natty little trophy, which they might want display to potential clients to prove their punting prowess.

EyeFA will pay close attention to some of the techniques employed on the poker table and how closely they correlate to managers' investment techniques. It is not yet known whether Amaranth Advisers is planning to turn up for a bit of a punt.
