He will succeed Catherine Walker, who chaired the fund for the past three years.
Fairley comes from a legal background, establishing IFS Fairley in the 1990s, and still provides superannuation advice to legal firm Holding Redlich.
He is also chair of Zoos Australia and the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council.
