There is a new Australian head of institutional business at Fidelity International.

Fidelity International has appointed Gary Bailey as its new head of institutional business for Australia.

Bailey joins Fidelity from his most recent role as managing director for Australia and New Zealand at Wellington Management, where he was responsible for growing the Wellington business in the domestic markets.

Bailey has worked in the investment management industry for over 16 years and has been employed in a number of senior positions during this period.

He spent over 11 years at MLC, where at one point he was senior portfolio manager on the international equities team.

Later during this stint he was involved in the strategic alliance MLC formed with Capital International and held the position of Capital National Alliance senior vice president. In this role he oversaw the distribution of Capital International's product in the local market.

"Gary's commercial experience, combined with his knowledge of the institutional landscape, will be a significant advantage as we further build our institutional business in Australia," Fidelity International managing director Australia Gerard Doherty said.

"The success of our institutional business is a key plank in our overall strategy and I am very excited to have an executive of Gary's experience and reputation to help us achieve our goals."
