Twittering off

A few weeks ago this column reported how the Twitter phenomenon is taking off and how useful it could be for people seeking gainful employment.

Now we've learnt it is being used at the other end of the spectrum by financial services professionals.

Recently, ANZ retail chief executive Brian Hartzer resigned from his position and the means by which he decided to tell everyone was Twitter.

The media picked up the story from Twitter and that's when they began ringing the bank to find out what had happened.

With this new development in the world of instant communication, we fear for all employers come New Year's Eve 2009.

This event more than any other prompts a rethink of careers and jobs and with the advent of Twitter and a bit of Dutch courage employers might have to brace themselves for a record number of instant resignations on the night.
