Russell Investments is seeking global opportunities as its next step in the development of the exchange-traded fund (ETF) industry, the company has today revealed.

"Our approach has always been to deliver innovative and tailored solutions that meet specific Australian investors' needs so we are continuing to look for ETF opportunities, specifically with a focus on outcome-oriented solutions," Russell Investments ETF product specialist Australia Paula Boon told InvestorDaily.

"One theme that has emerged is to offer a global solution, which would fit and complement the current suite of ETFs we have at the moment," she said.

"We're still in the early stages of scoping out our opportunities but it will definitely be in the global space."

She said global opportunities were also a step advisers were starting to think about.

Furthermore, a challenging area for the ETF industry as a whole has been the slow pick up of ETFs by the institutional market, Ms Boon said.

"We hoped there would be more take up from institutions as more ETF products have come into the market.

"But we're definitely seeing a lot more interest coming from advisers and we've moved away from just the basic ETF education with some of the advisers that we see."
