MLC has appointed former Schroders portfolio manager Jonathan Armitage as chief investment officer (CIO) of MLC Investment Management.

Mr Armitage has been serving in the role in an acting capacity for five months but will now formally take over the position, effective immediately. He will have overall responsibility for the investment outcomes of the MLC Investment Management team.

He has 20 years' experience in equities across several international markets, having worked in New York, London and Sydney, according to MLC.

He joined MLC in 2011 from Schroders, where he was portfolio manager for global equities, leading the team responsible for restructuring MLC's Australian and international share strategies.

"I am delighted to announce Jonathan's appointment to this role," said Garry Mulcahy, MLC's executive general manager of asset management.

"He has done an excellent job as acting CIO over the last five months and was the clear leading candidate from our extensive external search process.

"We look forward to the continued evolution of MLC's in-house investment capabilities under his stewardship."

Mr Armitage said the team would look to continue to develop and improve MLC's diversified multi-manager and direct investment product offerings.

"I am very excited to be leading such a quality team of investment professionals," he said.

"Over the last two years we have evolved our investment strategy, made improvements to our infrastructure and aligned the business for future success and growth."
