Westpac chief hired to transform and modernise bank's customer service.

Former St George Bank group executive Peter Clare will start his new job today as Westpac Banking Corporation (Westpac) consumer financial services group executive.

Clare will report to Westpac chief executive Gail Kelly and replaces Mike Pratt who quit in December last year.

"Peter is a strong executive who will have a key role in driving customer service across Westpac's consumer business," Kelly said.

"He will bring both innovation and transformation to this important part of the business."

Clare has a proven track record in strategy, operations and general banking, Kelly added.

In February last year Westpac split its former Australian Business and Consumer Banking section into two divisions - consumer financial services and business financial services.

Consumer financial services encompasses mortgage and personal lending, including third party relationships, cards, and savings and transaction accounts.

Clare spent six years at St George Bank, first as strategy head and more recently as technology and operations group executive.

He has also held several senior executive positions at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
