Motorists across the country can halve their car insurance costs simply by shopping around, according to research company Cannex.

Cannex's "Car insurance star ratings" report showed new insurers in the market, particularly online providers, were driving down costs.

It gave Allianz, Budget Direct and Cashback five-star ratings as they offered the best value to motorists on average.

The data showed drivers from New South Wales payed an average $1430 a year, more than double that for motorists in Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
