Orbis Investment Management Australia has launched its second fund for the retail market since the firm started its operations with the Australian equity fund in 2004.

The Orbis/SM Australia Opportunity Fund will invest in equities, target a return above the cash rate and should be regarded as an alternative to traditional cash or money market and income-generating funds.

"The fund aims to provide stable, long-term returns that exceed the RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) cash rate. It is ideal for people who don't want the volatility of the share market but want a better return than cash over time," Orbis Australia Fund portfolio manager Simon Marais said.

"The default position is 100 per cent in cash and money market instruments, with the option to invest up to 50 per cent on the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange)."
