Tait will be based in Sydney and report to Credit Suisse Australian chief executive David Livingstone and Asia-Pacific head of private banking Marcel Kreis.
Tait joins Credit Suisse from Caledonia Investments, where he was executive director, head of investment advisory and distribution.
He has also held senior positions with Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Macquarie Bank.
In his new job, he has been charged with leading the growth of Credit Suisse's private banking business.
Commenting on the appointment, Livingstone said: "Australia is a priority market and private banking a priority business for Credit Suisse in this market. Edward will play a major role in driving collaboration with our investment banking and asset management divisions to offer comprehensive advice to our private banking clients."
