Grant Kennaway is to join Morningstar in the newly created position of head of fund research, Asia-Pacific.
In his new role, the former Lonsec research general manager will be responsible for developing Morningstar's fund research business in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand, a company statement said.
Kennaway will report jointly to Morningstar fund research president Don Phillips and Morningstar Australasia chief executive Anthony Serhan.
Morningstar Australasia fund research co-heads Tim Murphy and Chris Douglas will continue in their existing roles, reporting to Kennaway.
"Grant is a respected member of the Australian investment research community, with a global outlook and strong commitment to quality investment analysis," Serhan said.
"I have known him for many years, and I'm confident he will make a valuable contribution to Morningstar's global fund research activities."
Commenting on Kennaway's appointment, Phillips said: "Grant will play a key role in helping us strengthen our capability in the Asia-Pacific region."
Lonsec announced Kennaway's departure yesterday.
Kennaway is succeeded in the research general manager role by Amanda Gillespie.
