ANZ appoints head of private banking

ANZ has appointed a former Royal Bank of Scotland banker to the position of head of private banking in Australia.

Mike Norfolk joins ANZ from UK-based Coutts & Cowhere he held the position of head of private banking and was based in London.

The newly-created position will report to ANZ global head of private banking Manfred Liechti and ANZ global wealth chief executive Joyce Phillips.

Mr Norfolk will sit above Stuart Morley, who is based in Melbourne, and head of ANZ private wealth, Australia NSW, Michael Loughman.

Ms Phillips said the group was looking to connect its clients to the "significant wealth flows across the Asia Pacific region".

"Mike is an experienced private banker, with a proven track record of delivering exceptional service to clients," she said.

Mr Norfolk has spent 15 of his 20 years as a banker in the private banking sector. He was head of private banking at Coutts & Co from  March 2011, and was "responsible for driving business improvement across the UK and selected international locations", according to an ANZ statement.

"He also held a number of senior leadership roles with Coutts between 1998 and 2010, tasked with leading large teams to drive long-term sustainable growth in the UK wealth management business," the statement said.

Mr Norfolk will be based in Sydney and will start in his new role in early 2014.
