MetLife announces Australian CEO

Insurance and retirement firm MetLife has appointed a former BT executive as its new chief executive in Australia.

Deanne Stewart will begin her role in mid-July and will report directly to MetLife senior vice president and head of designated markets and health, Asia, Dr Nirmala Menon.

According to a statement released by MetLife, Ms Stewart will be responsible for executing “the corporate strategy to spearhead the next phase of growth for MetLife’s business in Australia and accelerate shareholder returns while ensuring the operational effectiveness of the business”.

Ms Stewart, who has 20 years of experience in the financial services sector, makes the move from BT Financial Group where she spent the past seven years – culminating in her most recent position of BT general manager for super, marketing and direct.

Before that, Ms Stewart served as BT general manager for customer experience and marketing, where she oversaw BT’s customer experience and marketing operations.

Prior to her time at BT, Ms Stewart worked at Merrill Lynch Investment Management as managing director, head of international private client business.

Dr Menon said Australia is an "important market" for MetLife.

"Deanne brings a wealth of experience, leadership acumen, and relationship building skills to the business as well as a strong track record of delivery which will prove invaluable in driving business growth in Australia," said Dr Menon.

"Deanne’s deep understanding and passion for the customer will also help MetLife build a strong, differentiated position in the Australian marketplace," Dr Menon said.
