Around $13 billion of the $15.5 billion expansion will go to businesses in Victoria as more restrictive lockdowns push unemployment into the double digits.
“It’s a very substantial commitment,” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told media. “We’re now going to have JobKeeper at $101 billion, the single largest program that any Australian government has ever undertaken in terms of economic support.”
Eligibility requirements will also be softened so that businesses will only have to demonstrate a fall in September quarter turnover compared with the same quarter in 2019 rather than in both June and the September quarter. Around 4 million Australians will be on JobKeeper through the September quarter.
