Although the Prime Minister declined to specify when an election would be called on Thursday, his department prematurely announced at 12.23pm via its X account that the government is now operating in caretaker mode.

The Department of the Prime Minister tweeted: "The Government is now operating in accordance with caretaker conventions, pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election".

Providing a link to ‘Guidance on Caretaker Conventions’, the department also said comments would be disabled for the period.

The post was made while Parliament was sitting and was deleted several minutes later. InvestorDaily understands that the PM's department confirmed the post was an error.

Just moments before the blunder, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the federal election would be called "imminently", though he declined to provide a specific timeline.

The election must be held by 17 May, and could be called as soon as tomorrow if the PM's department's X blunder is anything to go by.

InvestorDaily's parent company Momentum Media is holding its Election 2025 event on Thursday, 10 April 2025, at Pullman Sydney Hyde Park.

Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones will keynote the event, alongside shadow treasurer Angus Taylor, shadow financial services minister Luke Howarth, AMP’s chief economist Shane Oliver, Financial Services Council CEO Blake Briggs, Financial Advice Association Australia CEO Sarah Abood, and Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia CEO Mary Delahunty.
